The Ants You See Are a Fraction of the Colony Behind Them
Ghost ants and white-footed ants are the two you will meet most often in Sarasota. Both are covered on every plan.
Sarasota has more pest ant species than almost anywhere in the country, and the ones people actually call about are rarely the ones they expect. Ghost ants and white-footed ants account for most indoor complaints. Both nest in wall voids, under cabinets and in potted plants, and both trail toward moisture rather than food, which is why they turn up around sinks and dishwashers in spotless kitchens.
The trailing ants on your counter are foragers. They are a small share of a colony that stays hidden, and killing them changes nothing about the colony producing more. Ghost ants and white-footed ants also reproduce by budding, meaning a colony under stress splits into new colonies rather than dying. That is why store-bought repellent sprays frequently make an ant problem larger instead of smaller.
Effective ant work starts with identifying the species, because the species determines whether the answer is a bait, a non-repellent application, or a structural fix outdoors.

Why Ant Problems in Sarasota Do Not Resolve on Their Own
Florida has no winter die-off. Colonies grow year-round, and several of our common species produce multiple queens that break away to start new colonies across the same property.
Ghost Ants
The most common indoor ant in Sarasota County. Roughly one sixteenth of an inch, with a dark head and a pale, almost translucent abdomen that makes them hard to see against a light countertop. They nest in wall voids, behind baseboards, inside potted plants and in wall-mounted appliances, and a single colony commonly maintains dozens of satellite nests throughout a house.
Ghost ants bud aggressively. Spraying a visible trail with a repellent product typically splits the colony and produces new trails in rooms that were previously clear.
White-Footed Ants
Colonies routinely reach the hundreds of thousands, among the largest of any pest ant in Florida. They nest in wall voids, attics, tree cavities and landscaping, and they move between the structure and the yard along utility lines, fence tops and branches touching the roof.
They do not respond well to conventional baits, because a large share of the colony feeds on honeydew from plant-feeding insects rather than on what a bait station offers. Controlling them usually means addressing the landscape as much as the structure.
Fire Ants
The species with a genuine medical dimension. Fire ant venom causes an immediate burning sting followed by a raised welt and a white pustule that can persist for several days. A small minority of people experience severe allergic reactions requiring medical attention.
Children and pets are most at risk, because they are the least likely to move away quickly when a mound is disturbed. Mounds multiply across lawns, landscape beds and driveway edges, and heavy rain frequently drives colonies to relocate and form new mounds within days.
Carpenter Ants and Other Species
Carpenter ants do not eat wood, but they excavate galleries in wood that is already soft from a moisture problem, most often around window frames, door frames and roof leaks. Finding them is a reliable signal that there is water damage somewhere that has not been identified yet.
Pharaoh ants bud even more readily than ghost ants and are a serious contamination concern in kitchens. Big-headed ants build interconnected colonies that span whole properties and push up small dirt piles along sidewalks and foundation lines.

How We Actually Get Rid of Them
Three things have to happen together. Any one of them alone is why ants come back.

Identify
We determine the species before selecting a product. Ghost, white-footed, fire, carpenter, pharaoh and big-headed ants each require a different formulation and placement strategy, and the wrong choice on the wrong species commonly makes the problem worse rather than slower.

Reach the Nest
Indoors we use non-repellent products that foraging workers do not detect and carry back to the colony, which reaches the queen and the brood rather than the ants on the counter. Fire ant mounds get direct treatment paired with a broadcast bait across the yard so untreated mounds do not simply refill the space.

Close the Route
Most indoor ant pressure originates outside. We treat the perimeter, clear trails at entry points, and identify the branches, utility lines, mulch beds and irrigation issues that are giving colonies a path in. Without this step the interior work has to be repeated indefinitely.

STEP 01
Tell Us Where You Are Seeing Them
Which rooms, how long it has been going on, and whether anyone has been stung. If you can send a photo of a trail it often lets us narrow the species before the visit.
STEP 02
We Inspect and Identify
About two hours on the first visit. We follow trails back toward nest sites, check the moisture points ants concentrate around, and inspect the exterior for the route in.
STEP 03
Species-Matched Treatment
Non-repellent applications and baits chosen for the species we found, placed in cracks and voids indoors rather than across open floor. Interior work is dry in about thirty minutes.
STEP 04
Maintained on Every Visit
Perimeter treatment, trail and web clearance, and a written note of what we found. If activity returns between visits we come back at no charge.
